General Tournament Notes:
  • As a historical note, the 2001 Virginia Beach open was the last AVP event which wasn’t a dual-gender event as all of the tournaments since then have featured both men’s and women’s divisions.
  • Although it’s been 12 years since the AVP has played in Virginia Beach, there are still some competitors in this year’s event who played in 2010.  On the men’s side there are six players; Jeremy Ayers (placed 57th), Shane Donohue (placed 41st), Avery Drost (placed 41st), Brian Gilmore (placed 41st), Jon Mesko (placed 25th) and Gene Wade (placed 57th).  None of the women competing this year played in the only previous AVP women’s event here in 2010.
  • 16-year old Alexa Fernandez qualified.  Earlier this year Sarah Wood qualified at the age of 14 (youngest male or female to ever qualify).  Those two players will face each other in the first round.  Here is the list of the youngest women to ever qualify:
    Sarah Wood - on 6/10/22 - 14 years,1 months,16 days
    Jane Croson - on 4/29/10 - 16 years,5 months,30 days
    Summer Ross - on 7/16/09 - 16 years,6 months,26 days
    Megan Kraft - on 5/2/19 - 16 years,7 months,5 days
