General Tournament Notes
Semifinal Notes - Women
- The 123 total men’s teams is the 5th most ever, all trailing previous Manhattan Beach events (136 in 2009, 135 in 2006, 130 in 2017 and 127 in 2007).
- The 107 men’s teams in the qualifier is the 2nd most ever, coming up just shy of the record 111 in Manhattan Beach in 2006.
- The 98 total women’s teams ranks as the 2nd most ever, behind only the 102 that competed in Hermosa Beach in 2018.
- Likewise the 82 women’s teams in the qualifier makes this the 2nd biggest women’s qualifier in history, behind last year’s Hermosa Beach Open (86 teams).
- The 221 combined teams is tied for the 2nd biggest combined field in AVP history as the largest ever was 234 teams (136 men, 98 women) in Manhattan Beach in 2009 and the 2017 Manhattan Beach event in 2017 also had 221 teams.
- There are just three men's teams competing here which have previously won an AVP title (Billy Allen / Stafford Slick, Jeremy Casebeer / Chaim Schalk and Ed Ratledge / Roberto Rodriguez), all of whom have won one title as partners.
- The only women's team competing here which has previously won an AVP title as partners is Emily Day / Betsi Flint (two AVP wins).
- Hermosa Beach will mark the final opportunity for teams to earn an automatic berth in the season-ender in Hawai’i.
Semifinal Notes - Women
- The seeds of the semifinal teams (1, 18, 21 and 24) are by far the highest in AVP history... the combined total (64) surpassed the previous record of 41 in the 2017 Manhattan Beach Open (1, 2, 15, 23).
- Chrissy Jones / Susannah Muno, seeded 24th, become the lowest seeded team to ever reach the semifinals, eclipsing the 23rd-seeded duo Kelly Claes and Sara Hughes in Manhattan Beach 2017.
- In Seattle 2017 Skylar Caputo / Sarah Pavan advanced to the semifinals after being seeded 12th in the qualifier, which until this weekend was the lowest seeded qualifier to ever advance… this weekend two teams eclipsed that mark (Chrissy Jones / Susannah Muno 47th and Kathryn Hogan / Megan Rice 13th).
- The first time a team from the qualifier ever made it to the semifinals was in Cincinnati in 2013… prior to Hermosa Beach there had been a total of 8 teams which advanced from the qualifier into the semifinals (never more than one in any single event), and now there are three qualifier teams amongst the 4 semifinalists.
- There will be a guaranteed team from the qualifier in the championship match, just the 4th time that has ever happened in women’s history, along with Cincinnati 2013 (the only time a qualifier won the title), San Francisco 2016, and Austin 2019.
- At least one of these teams (and possibly two) will break the record for being the lowest seeded main draw team to reach the championship match, as currently the record is #15 (Nicole Branagh / Brandie Wilkerson in Manhattan Beach 2017).
