Men's Championship Notes

  • One of these two teams will join Jake Gibb / Casey Patterson in becoming the only teams to win multiple times this season
  • In fact, this will mark the first time since 2009 that the AVP has had two teams that have won multiple events during the course of one season
  • The AVP titles this season went to the top-seeded team the first two events, and then the last 4 events either #3 or #4 have won
  • Doherty / Mayer lead the series 2-1 all time with Bourne / Hyden winning the only match that went to three sets
Ryan Doherty / John Mayer (#2)
  • Doherty / Mayer are playing together for the 7th time on the AVP and 13th time overall
  • Doherty / Mayer have a 26-8 match record this year (and in their partnership on the AVP), with all but one of the losses coming against teams seeded in the top 4
  • The duo is 8-3 in three-set matches on the AVP
  • Doherty / Mayer are the only team thus far to sweep every opponent in Huntington Beach, and they have allowed more than 18 points in a set just once
  • Doherty is 1-6 in AVP championship matches (0-3 with Nick Lucena, 0-1 with Todd Rogers, 1-2 with Mayer)
  • Doherty advanced to 8 straight AVP semifinals before taking a fifth last week in Mason
  • Doherty made his pro beach volleyball debut in Huntington Beach in 2010 with Paul Munoz… seeded 57th in the qualifier, the duo lost a three-set match to Rob Reaugh / Bryce Winsor and placed 89th… the next time Doherty competed in Huntington Beach, he finished third with Casey Patterson
  • Mayer is 3-4 in AVP finals (1-1 with Brad Keenan, 1-0 with Jeff Nygaard, 0-1 with Matt Prosser, 1-2 with Doherty)
  • Mayer played three events (all AVP) with NBC announcer Kevin Wong (as well as three with his younger brother Scott Wong)…  in Kevin Wong’s last domestic event ever (Jose Cuervo event in Miami in September 2011), Mayer and Matt Prosser eliminated Wong and Jess Rambis
Tri Bourne / John Hyden (#3)
  • Bourne / Hyden are playing together for the 18th time on the AVP and 38th time overall
  • Bourne / Hyden have a 61-26 match record on the AVP Tour together, including 2-4 in finals… they have reached the semifinals in 14 of their 18 AVP events together
  • This season the duo is 17-4 on the AVP Tour, including 4-2 in 3rd sets
  • This year they are 4-0 when playing against the top seeded team (each time against Gibb / Patterson)
  • Bourne has played just 1 AVP tournament with someone other than Hyden (Raffe Paulis in Cincinnati in Sept. 2012)
  • Hyden has 25 career victories with 3 different partners… all 3 players he has won with were originally from Hawaii (Mike Lambert, Sean Scott and Tri Bourne)… Hyden is 10-19 in AVP finals
  • Hyden’s first AVP victory came in July 2005 in Ohio with Mike Lambert... Tri Bourne was 16 years old at the time

Women's Championship Notes

  • The championship match has a double digit seed for just the third time in AVP history… the other two times were in Miami in 2007 (#11 Jennifer Kessy / April Ross placed 2nd in what was their first event playing together ever) and in Cincinnati in 2013 (#14 Emily Day / Summer Ross won)
  • The composite total of the seeds of the four teams in the semifinals is 26, which is the second highest in AVP history… the only one higher was in Chicago in 2007, which totaled 28 (seeds 1, 6, 7 and 14)
  • April Ross will seek to set a record on the women’s side by becoming the first player to win titles in the same season with at least three different partners… she has already won with Kerri Walsh Jennings and Jennifer Fopma (twice)… that would equal a feat that has been done three times by men:
Emanuel won with Andre Gomes, Kent Steffes and Jose Loiola in 1998
Kent Steffes won with Jose Loiola, Emanuel, and Mike Whitmarsh in 1998
Kent Steffes won with Karch Kiraly, Tim Hovland and Steve Vrebalovich in 1990
  • Fendrick played 6 tournaments (3 AVP, 3 FIVB) with Branagh, with a best of 4th on the FIVB Tour

Nicole Branagh / Jenny Kropp (#1)
  • This marks the duo’s 6th domestic event together and 8th tournament together overall (the first time was in 2012 on the FIVB Tour)
  • They are 24-8 on the AVP Tour, including 4-3 in three-set matches
  • The pair is 1-2 in AVP finals, getting their second place finishes in both New York and Manhattan Beach before winning in Chicago
  • The duo has reached the championship match in each of the three biggest US cities (New York, L.A. and Chicago)
  • Branagh and Kropp are 4-0 in AVP semifinal matches, sweeping all four opponents, but their previous three finals have all come against teams seeded first or second
  • Branagh is 17-23 in AVP team finals, and with the exception of an appearance in a title match of an individual event, each time prior to this year she played alongside an Olympic medalist… she was 14-15 with Elaine Youngs, 2-2 with Misty May-Treanor, 1-2 with Kropp and 0-2 with Holly McPeak and Kerri Walsh Jennings
  • This marks the 5th AVP final Kropp has ever played in (0-1 with Whitney Pavlik, losing in Hermosa Beach to Jennifer Kessy / April Ross and 1-2 with Branagh).

Lauren Fendrick / April Ross (#11)
  • This is the first time these two players have ever played together
  • Since 2001, just 2 teams have won when on the AVP when paying together for the first time:
  • 2001 – Santa Barbara          Dianne DeNecochea / Liz Masakayan
  • 2002 – Huntington Beach    Holly McPeak / Elaine Youngs
  • All 4 teams Fendrick / Ross beat to get to the championship match have advanced to at least one semifinal prior to Huntington Beach… their opponents (including title match) include the top 3 seeds plus a three-time Olympic Gold medalist
  • Fendrick is playing in her 9th AVP title match, having won with Brooke Niles here in Huntington Beach in 2001
  • In AVP championships Fendrick is 1-0 with Niles, 0-5 with Brooke Sweat and 0-2 with Brittany Hochevar… she won in her first AVP title match appearance, but since then has gone 0-7
  • Fendrick has enjoyed success in Huntington Beach recently, all with different partners… in 2011 she won with Brooke Niles, placed 2nd with Rachel Scott in 2012, 2nd in 2013 with Brittany Hochevar, and 3rd last year with Brooke Sweat
  • Ross has 23 AVP wins to her credit, with a 23-13 mark in title matches on the AVP… she is 12-13 with Jennifer Kessy,   9-0 with Kerri Walsh Jennings and 2-0 with Jennifer Fopma
  • Beginning with her win in Huntington Beach in 2010 with Jennifer Kessy, Ross has won 19 of the last 24 AVP tournaments she has entered
  • This is the 4th time Ross has played for the title in Huntington Beach, placing 2nd with Jennifer Kessy in 2009 before winning with Kessy in 2010… she won last year here with Kerri Walsh Jennings
