In New York 2017 Ricardo Santos / Chaim Schalk defeated Phil Dalhausser / Nick Lucena in three sets
- This marks just the seventh time ever that a men’s event is being held in Austin, with this being the third year in a row. The women have had 12 prior tournaments here, including five on the AVP Tour. This marks the third straight year that Austin has served as host of an AVP event.
- Due to space limitations, both qualifiers had to be capped at 48 teams, meaning there are a total of 60 men’s teams and 60 women’s teams in the field. With the 32 men’s teams and 15 women’s pairs which were turned away due to space restrictions, the total number of teams entered was 92 men and 75 women.
- On May 1, 2005 Dalhausser won his first career title, winning in Austin on the AVP Tour along with Nick Lucena. Since that point, Dalhausser has won every AVP tournament held in the state of Texas. On top of winning the last six AVP events in Texas, Dalhausser has done so convincingly, compiling a 32-1 match record over that span, including 30 consecutive victories.Of his 32 match wins, 24 have come by sweeps, including 12 straight.
- From the Cincinnati event in September 2015 through Huntington Beach, there have been 26 AVP events and 13 of the men’s titles have been won by a player age 40 or older. In those 26 championship matches, at least one player has been over the age of 40 a total of 18 times.
- The qualifier in Austin provides the opportunity for a repeat of Huntington Beach (when two sets of twins advanced to the main draw), as the Witt twins (McKenna (Witt) Thibodeau and Madison Witt) will again be competing for a spot in the main draw, along with a pair of 18-year old twins from Lenexa, Kansas, Lauren and Lindsey Hattaway.
- The only women's team competing here which has previously won an AVP title as partners is Emily Day / Betsi Flint (two AVP wins).
Main Draw Notes
- Prior to the first round in Austin, only twice before has a #16 seed defeated a #1 seed in the first round of an AVP tournament (men or women). Then it happened on both the men's and women's side. The previous two occurrences of a top-seeded team losing to a #16 in the first round were both on the men's side:
In New York 2017 Ricardo Santos / Chaim Schalk defeated Phil Dalhausser / Nick Lucena in three sets
- 16th-seeded Lauren Dickson / Katie Lindelow upset #1 seed Emily Day / Betsi Flint, marking just the third time in AVP history that a top-seeded women's team lost to a team seeded 13th or lower. With that loss, #1 seeds are now 225-3 all time against teams seeded 13th or lower.
